Audience and story board
Audiences and storyboard
My target audience for my film trailer will be 16 to 25 year olds who enjoy watching horror movies with a twist. This age group tend to have more of an open mind and have a lot of ‘what ifs’ allowing them to venture into the film with an inquisitive mind. It can also take them back to their childhood fears, perhaps of shadows, not liking the landing light to be turned off whilst they were in bed or not wanting their bedroom door shut.
Here is a moodboard to show what kind of things my target audience is in to.
Horror films have been around since silent movies in 1910. So this shows that being scared is something the audience really likes and really wants! Although in the silent movies the audience were scared about seeing a train moving in a film as they thought the train would actually come straight out of the screen! Horror films became quite popular in the 1970s with films like the Omen and Nightmare on Elm Street but during the 1980s and early1990s there was a bit of a lull until in 1977 the film ‘Scream’ came out to scare everyone.

Location
For the location of my filming, I looked at a selection of churches to film at. After looking around, I got it down to three choices.
Location
I wanted my filming to take place at night time to give it a real scary/menacing feel to it, but even though my final choice of venue was perfect in many respects, the only problem was that there wasn’t hardly any lighting apart from a small light on the church wall. I was worried that this may cause problems with the quality of the film, but as there wasn’t a main road or High Street near by, I felt my choice was still the correct one. I tried to think of ways around the lighting problem and came up with the idea of asking the actors to bring along a torch each, which turned out to be a good idea as it created enough light but kept it realistic at the same time.

Were am i going to film?

My First thoughts of where to film was to find the scariest place I could find! So I thought about filming at an ex-mental asylum. A friend told me of one called Cane Hill. When researching the place, I thought it was ideal because it had been run down for some time with natural decay and arson. But as you can see by the pictures it is now fenced off so that the public can not go in. Here are some pictures to show you how good,(but very scary!) it would have been to film there.
Therefore, I had to look at alterative places to film and after visiting a selection of local places, I sort listed three churches.
Planning for the film
As I was filming a horror film, one of the questions I asked myself is ‘What makes people scared?’. I came up with the dark, the dead and shadows etc. So the location was very important to get right. Once I had found the location, I though about my characters. I wanted my main character to be an adult and to look as if he was from a mental asylum. I didn’t want him to say much as I wanted his character to come out by what he was wearing and by using his facial expressions. I dressed him in a dressing gown to demonstrate that not everything was in order with my character as why would he be wandering around a graveyard in a dressing gown? To make the character look even more out of place, I gave him a teddy bear.
For the extras in the film, I just wanted them to be dressed in an everyday way, so I asked them to turn up as if they were going out for a walk. I didn’t tell them much about the plot apart from they would be walking through a grave yard and just to react if anything unusual happened! I also asked them to bring a torch along as it would be dark. I didn’t want to tell them much more as I wanted their reactions to be really realistic. On arrival, they did look a bit apprehensive, which was exactly what I was looking for. I also kept my main character and the extras apart so I could capture their immediate reactions.
Influences
My first influence was from a recent film called 'Paranormal Activities', which was a sell out. They had a lot of midnight showings of the film, which I thought was a great idea to create that special scary feel to it. I also looked at people’s reactions to the film on Face book and most people were scared witless!
One of the main reasons for choosing this film was because it was all recorded on a hand held camera. This was very effective in the way it frightened the audience and showed what was happening.
The trailer for this film really caught my attention as it was very unusual. The Director showed some abstracts of the film, but also the audiences’ reaction as it was being shown i.e. there was a scary scene and you could see the audience being really scared by the expressions on their faces and grapping the person next to them, so this told me that the film being advertised must be a horror movie and extremely scary and what did happen next?!
This I'm sure would make a big impact for people wanting to see the film as they will see the genuine reactions of the audience and get a good idea of what the plot is about - they will definitely be left wanting to see more!
My second trailer is 'Cloverfield'. This was also filmed on a hand held camera, which I feel helps the audience experience of feeling they that are taking part in the film as it is happening. This film is about mysterious and gigantic creatures that attack New York. The main thing about the promotion of this film is that when the trailer came out, it didn’t give away the name of the film which created a lot of speculation and talk about it; I thought this was a great advertising trick.
In one of the first clips of the trailer you see the Statue of Liberty's head come crashing down on to the road. The first thought which came to my mind was 'what the hell is happening?’ This first clip really left me feeling that I wanted to find out more about the film and therefore, would go to watch it. So if I was feeling that way, it should make a lot of people also think the same. I think the trailer sets the scene very well, showing where it is taking place, who the main characters are and gave a good outline of the storyline.
